Volcano Percussion - Bata Drums
The Bata drum dates back roughly 500 years and is believed to have been introduced by an African Yoruba King, Shango. It was introduced to the Americas thru slavery of the 1800's. The religion and beliefs the Yoruba brought with them to Cuba became the basis for what is known as the Santeria religion. This religion spawned the creation of the first "sacred" Bata in Cuba around 1830. Today, like with many other world percussion instruments, the Bata has found itself utilized in secular music.
Volcano Batas come in 3 sizes known as the Iya (mother), Itotele (father) and Okonkolo (baby). We chose African Mahogany as the appropriate wood. African Mahogany is a fine tone wood with beautiful grain. The heads are available in traditional goat or calf. The hardware is all hand made stainless steel buffed to a mirror finish. These drums are all stave made and held together by a modern form of dowelling. Each drum is one piece. Not 2 different drums glued together. Like all our drums we use a maximum amount of staves to create the roundest drum interiors for the finest quality sound. They can be ordered with a hand rubbed gloss finish or in satin.
